DECATUR, Ga. – Agnes Scott College announced that Nicole E. Stamant, a professor in the college’s English department, has been selected as a Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair, a position supported by The Trust for Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chairs.

Stamant becomes the second Agnes Scott faculty member to be so honored. Richard D. Parry, Fuller E. Callaway Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, earned the same distinction in 1986.

“I’m deeply honored by this recognition and especially thrilled to receive it at such a purposefully inclusive institution as Agnes Scott,” said Stamant. “Students here know they can share a broad range of perspectives openly and confidently, in a supportive environment where they’re encouraged to be their most authentic selves. It’s a privilege to be part of this faculty and to contribute to the academic experience of so many brilliant young minds.”

“Throughout her tenure here, Dr. Stamant has become known for her exceptional leadership and commitment to her students,” said Leocadia I. Zak, president of Agnes Scott College. “Under her tutelage, students learn the value of excellence while discovering the power of self-expression. She is a prolific scholar, a gifted mentor and a valuable citizen of our campus community.”

Stamant joined the Agnes Scott faculty in 2011 and chaired the English department in 2018-2019 and from 2020 to 2022. Prior, she was a postdoctoral lecturer and graduate assistant at Texas A&M University, where she received both an MA and PhD in English. She holds a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies from Texas A&M and earned her BA in English/creative writing and French from Sweet Briar College in Virginia.

She also served as editorial manager of the academic journal a/b: Autobiography Studies and as first vice president of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association.

“Nicole’s scholarly work is groundbreaking,” said Rachel Bowser, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Her research on life-writing and memoir helps us see the artfulness and the interventions in the genre. Her innovations in course design and her dedication to students, and to their individual growth, are deeply meaningful to the culture of the college.”

The Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Trust was established in 1968 by the Callaway Foundation, Inc., to encourage the enrichment of academic programs at designated Georgia colleges. The Callaway Professorial Chair, funded through the Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chairs Trust was established by the Callaway Foundation Inc., and is administered by Bank of America. It aims to help these institutions add and retain exemplary faculty members. The chairs are named to honor Georgia native and textile industrialist Fuller E. Callaway, Sr., in recognition of his profound interest in education.

Stamant lives in Decatur with her husband, James – who also teaches English at Agnes Scott – and their two children.
